Our country got independence on 15th August, 1947. But, after this also, leaders were not elected as we did not have our own constitution.A permanent constitution was yet to be formed for India. At that time India was under the constitutional monarchy of King George VI, while the governor general of India was Lord Mountbatten. Later, a drafting committee was appointed in August, 1947 and Dr. B.R.Ambedkar was appointed as the chairman of this drafting committee. The drafting committee, after few months, on 4th November, 1947, prepared a draft constitution and submitted to the Constitution Assembly for the review. Further, the meetings of the Constitution Assembly was held in sessions and after a long process, approximately after two years, our constitution was made. Finally, it was 24th January, 1950, when the members of the Assembly, after some modifications in the draft constitution, approved the document and on 26th January, 1950, exactly after two days, the constitution came into force and it is running till date which we know as The Constitution of India. Also, why 26th January was selected as the day is not known to many of the people. It was because on 26th January, 1930, India was declared as Purna Swaraj as the demand for independence was made for the first time during the Lahore sessions of Indian National Congress. Thus, 26th January, 1930 was declared as Purna Swaraj Day, which means independence day. Thus, in order to honor our freedom fighter, it was the selected date.
