India is one of such paradises where you can speak your heart without the fear of someone gunning you down for that. Though Indians have more freedom than many fellow citizens of other countries, the situation here is not soothing anymore. In the last few years ,there have been imposed many restrictions on exercising the right of freedom of speech and expression. The right to freedom of expression gives people the right to express themselves through any media without the fear of getting punished.
Social media has been a very important tool in letting people express themselves on various topics across the globe like equality , providing people justice , standing against wrong , influencing people on practicing cleanliness like the campaign of Swachh bharat abhiyan etc. Also netizens raise their voice against any kind of injustice and sometimes go beyond . But with this freedom of speech comes the responsibility. This freedom does not entail them to abuse the nation and spread misinformation and incite the communal hatred. Therefore in such cases the government has the right to take legal actions against them . There is no specific legislation for this but there are certain provisions mentioned in the cyber laws which gives government the right to censor certain contents for example which is against the integrity of the nation, in case of the contempt of the court, misinformation which spreads riots ,etc.
It is the need of the hour that the government of India should make a specific legislation in this regard. For this , the government should form a committee of technical experts to analyse all the facets of the use and misuse of social media and then make a law accordingly in such a way that right of freedom is also not compromised and the media is also regulated. Thus avoiding complete censorship by the government and regulating the social media effectively.
