India needs waste management system and not a single one, but multiple kinds of waste management system. We see mounds of garbage lying everywhere in Indian cities. People throwing litter everywhere without batting an eye- polluted rivers, polluted air, polluted foodstuffs.
Society main idea, cleanliness was only to be maintained within one's house, but not outside it. There were no garbage bins outside the house, so one just chucked the garbage out of the house. On the other hand many countries as US,UK, Australia, UAE , France etc there are garbage bins outside almost every house, and there are larger garbage bins for each colony. Every child over there is taught by their parents that garbage is not to be dumped anywhere, but must be put in the garbage bin inside the house, from where one takes it usually at the end of the day to the bigger garbage can outside the houses, and that is collected by the municipality regularly.
No one in West throw litter on roads, public places , cafeterias, supermarkets, stores, parks, beaches etc. If one takes his dog for a walk and dog excretes on road, one has to pick up the excreta and throw it in garbage bin.In India other hand no one wound do that . One is travelling in a car has some litter , they just tosses it out of the car window on the road. Public transport, people like to eat in bus all kinds of snacks and the thrown litter where they are sitting. Many harmful tobacco are chewed and spited out of public transport windows . In India almost everything is polluted.
There are no strict laws against littering, but even laws comes up, people would throw litter on roads and other places. There is no social norm in Indian society. Indians didn't pay attention to civic planning. Roads become dusty. Garbage collection was not priority. trees had to be uprooted because of no planning. Drains are not covered. People realized that they don't have any incentive to change their behavior . Added corruption which make sure what over projects were taken 30% the quality is done. Its just the in sensitiveness of society which doesn't keep India clean.
India's concern for purity and its disgust of pollution goes much deeper than surface dirt that can be washed off. The people are concerned about deep, inner pollution, the defilement of the self. Anyone who has traveled to different countries of the world would identify hygiene as the biggest difference between India and the western world. We are in fact, guilty of maintaining and accepting poor hygiene and cleanliness around us.
Diseases spread because of poor hygiene levels. Maintaining good hygiene cuts down on our health care costs too.
