First fill 5 gallon jug and then pour it to 3 gallon jug ( we have 2 gallon still left in 5 gallon jug after pouring it to 3 gallon jug), Now pour out the 3 gallon jug completely and pour 2 gallon jug from 5 gallon jug to 3 gallon jug. now again pour in 5 gallon jug and pour to 3 gallon jug until it is not full . so we find we need to only pour 1 gallon as before we had 2 gallon in 3 gallon.
so now we are left with 4 gallon in 5 gallon jug.
