The scientific name of peacock is Pavo Cristatus.
There are three kinds of peacock in the world- The Indian Peacock, the Green or Javan Peacock, the Congo Peacock. The Indian Peacock and the Green peacock are the Asiatic species whereas, Congo Peacock are African species. Indian peacocks are found in Indian subcontinent, Green peacock are found in Indonesia and Congo peacock are found in Congo Basin.
The peacocks have a great significance in Indian mythology and culture also. In Hinduism, the Indian Peacock is the mount of Lord, Karthikeya, Goddess Saraswati, Goddess Kaumari and also depicted around Goddess Santoshi. Peacock feathers also adorn the crest of Lord Krishna. It is believed that during a war, Lord Kartikeya split the demon king in two halves. Then the Lord converted one half in peacock and the other a rooster. Peacock became the vehicle of the Lord and rooster became symbol of his flag.
The Chandragupta Maurya, founder of Mauryan Empire, also name his kingdom as Maurya, which means peacocks. The Mughal emperors built his throne in the shape of the peacock and it was called as Peacock Throne.
Peacocks are very shy and timid in nature. They can be generally seen in a flock. The female peacock is called as peahen. The peahens are dull in their looks and smaller in size as compared to peacocks. The peahens lack the beautiful feathers like peacocks. They lay eggs, about 4-5 eggs at a time. On an average, a peacock lives for about 20-25 years.
In 1963, the peacock was declared as the national bird of India because it has significance in Indian traditions. Also, it is well found in almost all the parts of the country making it really a national bird.
Peacocks have exquisite charm and is considered as the most beautiful bird of the earth due to it's vibrant and extravagant colors,. But, humans kill them in greed. There are many movements carried out there to stop poaching of peacocks. One such movement is Peacock Protection Force(PPF). it helps in protecting the bird. It is our duty to protect such a beautiful national heritage and national bird of our country.
