Lets assume elder present age is x years and younger age is y years.

As per question
x - y = 6 -------------- (1)

twelve years ago
(x-12) = 3 *(y-12)
=> 3y - x = 36-12
=> 3y-x = 24 ------- (2)

By solving the eq (1) and (2)

2y = 30 => y = 15 and x = 21

so elder age is 21 years.
