The major source of river pollution is the waste coming out from the industries. With the increase in urbanization, many industries have been setup in our country. Industries release tons of toxic and harmful chemicals and waste materials directly into the rivers. Industries waste, chemicals, many harmful oxides, gases and heavy metals are released into the rivers directly.
Next are the domestic wastes from households, sewage thrown in the water and also the human wastes increases the pollution in the rivers.
People can be mostly seen bathing in the rivers, washing utensils and clothes, washing cattle and many more in the rivers. This also contaminates water up to a great extent.
Continuous disposal of plastic bags, plastics bottles, solid wastes in the rivers.
India is a land of temples. All the flowers and garlands after worships are thrown in to the rivers. It also increases the pollution level of water.
Also, the acid rains, which is the result of global warming, contaminates the river water.

Rivers are home of many aquatic animals and plants.Due to the pollution of rivers, many plants die and fishes, turtles etc do not get suitable environment for survival, thus, they die.
In the long run, this can lead to loss of bio-diversity and also can lead to extinction of some species which can dis balance the eco-system.
According to the recent surveys done by the Central Pollution Control Board and Center for Science and Environment, it has been observed that almost out of 500 rivers, not even quarter of them are pure and fit for use. There are almost 10 billion gallons of municipal waste generated every day, out of which only approximately 30% of the water is treated. Yamuna and Ganga has become a garbage dump area. Ganga is said to be most polluted river in India.

Industrial wastes must be properly treated before throwing it into rivers directly.
People must not throw garbage, sewage, garland etc in water.
Non-biodegradable items such as plastic bottles, plastics etc must not be thrown into the rivers.
People must not take bath, wash clothes and utensils and cattle in the river.
Thus, concludingly, it can be said that it has become the need of the hour to look into this major problem seriously. We must never forget how much we are dependent on our rivers.
